Dear Friends,

In a recent sermon on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Francis challenged the faithful to make Jesus “the center of our hearts and lives.” He said, “The question of life demands a response of life, for it counts little to know the articles of faith, if we do not confess Jesus as the Lord of our lives.” He also called prayer “the water needed to nurture hope and increase fidelity,” saying it is a powerful way to overcome the difficulties of life. “Prayer makes us feel loved and it enables us to love in turn,” he said. “It makes us press forward in moments of darkness because it brings God’s light.”

The Sacramentine Sisters of Don Orione, who are celebrating the 90-year anniversary of their founding this month, offer an inspiring example of the power of prayer. They are blind nuns who offer up their lack of sight to God in the hopes of bringing light to those who have lost their way. What a beautiful witness they give to us all, and we pray that their prayers are answered in a special way on their anniversary on August 15.

August 15 is special in other ways as well. For one thing, it’s the anniversary of the ordination of our founder, Father James Keller, M.M., who became a Maryknoll priest in 1925. And of course, August 15 is also the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has been proclaimed this year as a special day of prayer for France. It’s just a little over a year ago that Father Jacques Hamel was killed by terrorists while celebrating Mass at Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray Church in France. In a statement recalling the humble service of Father Hamel, Archbishop Georges Pontier of Marseille said of August 15, “I invite you to pray for France. Let us ask the Lord, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, to raise up many men and women who live their ordinary lives for others and with others. Let the fraternity longed for become a reality.”

We encourage everyone to join in offering prayers for France this August 15 and to pray for the intercession of Saint John Vianney, whose feast falls on August 4. Known as the Cure of Ars, he guided his rural French parish back to the faith in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Let us pray that he intercede for the people of France, that they find healing together in Christ.

One of the most important ways people find their way to the faith is through the realization of God’s love for them. Our upcoming News Note, titled Accepting that God Loves You, addresses this topic in a beautiful way, showing that the path to faith is found in realizing God’s love in whatever state of imperfection we find ourselves. We encourage everyone to read and share this News Note because it is so helpful in revealing how infinite God’s love truly is.

Our 2018 Calendars and Three Minutes a Day books will soon be ready to order, and we encourage everyone to pick up copies of these to share with friends and loved ones. Our calendars feature beautiful cover photography and bits of wisdom for each day of the year. Our Three Minutes a Day book is a beloved classic (we’re up to Volume 52!) with short daily readings that shed light on the good that exists in the world. The aim of each of our Three Minutes a Day books has always been to help people of every background and circumstance take time out each day of the year to add spiritual meaning and purpose to their daily lives. Our series touches so many individuals that truly need to be lifted up in this day and age.

A special thanks to our Christopher friends for making all we do possible.

Joyfully,
